FAQ
Questions,
answered plainly.
Does keeping track of people make it cold?
It is a fair worry, and it is the reason the app is built the way it is. Grab a Seat does not score your relationships, rank your friends, or measure your performance. It holds two things: who you would like to stay close to, and roughly how often. The warmth is yours to supply. The app is just the thing that remembers.
Why doesn't it tell me how overdue I am?
Because that number makes people avoid the app rather than call their friend. Guilt is a terrible motivator for something you actually want to do. So Grab a Seat celebrates every reach-out and stays completely silent about the ones that did not happen. There is no streak to break, no counter climbing, and nothing waiting to be cleared.
Does it work without a connection?
Yes, once you are signed in. Your data lives on your phone, so every screen works offline, including adding people and logging that you got in touch. Anything you do offline syncs the next time you have a connection. Signing in for the first time does need a connection, because your account is verified with our sign-in provider.
What does it cost?
There is a free plan and it is a real one, not a trial. It holds as many people as you want to keep up with, and it gives you the reminders, birthday reminders, the import, the celebrations, and a note on each person. No card, no countdown, no ads.
The free plan used to stop at 25 people. That is gone, because charging for room was charging for the exact thing this app exists to correct: you can hold about five close friendships and fifty looser ones, the app shows you those numbers on purpose, and then billing you for a bigger number contradicted the whole idea. Every plan now holds everyone.
So the paid plans sell depth instead. Enhanced is $4.99 a month or $49.99 a year. It opens every note you have ever written about a person, rather than only the most recent one, and it adds the slower rhythms, for the people you catch up with twice a year or once a year. Premium is $11.99 a month or $119.99 a year. It adds Grab a Chair, which picks who to call when you tell it how much time you have; the anniversaries and details you want kept about someone; and circles you name and size yourself.
Paying by the year costs about two months less than paying by the month. Prices are in US dollars and include sales tax, so the number here is the number you are charged.
You can cancel either plan whenever you want and keep what you paid for until that period ends; the details are in the Terms of Use. If anything about this is unclear, email us.
What do you actually collect?
The people and notes you enter, so they can be backed up and synced to your other devices. Your account details from signing in. Your notification preferences and timezone, so reminders arrive at a sensible hour. If you enable notifications, a push token for your device.
We also record how the app is used: which screens you open and which actions you take, such as opening the app, logging that you reached out, or being shown a celebration. Each event carries the app version and the time, and is linked to your account. This runs on our own servers rather than through a third-party analytics provider, and it never includes your contacts' names, phone numbers, email addresses, notes, or anything you searched for. Every event we hold about you is included in your data export, so you can read exactly what this amounts to.
We also receive automatic error reports when something in the app breaks: the error, the stack trace, the app version and your account identifier. Those reports deliberately do not include your contacts' names, emails, phone numbers, notes, or anything you searched for. The full detail is in the Privacy Policy.
Do you sell my data or show me ads?
No, never. There is no advertising in the app, no advertising networks, no tracking pixels, and no third-party analytics SDKs. We do not follow you across other apps or websites and we do not sell or share your information. The usage events described above are our own, stay on our servers, and are visible to you in your export. This website has no third-party scripts and loads no external fonts, which is why it uses your device's own typefaces.
Can I get my data out?
Yes. Settings, then Data & Privacy, then Export My Data. You get all of it as JSON. You do not have to ask us and there is no waiting period.
Can I delete everything?
Yes. Settings, then Danger Zone, then Delete Account. Your contacts, notes, interactions and reminders are erased from our live database straight away, and your sign-in record is deleted at Clerk in the same step. Any copy that remains in an operational backup is retained no longer than 30 days. A paid plan ends with the account, including any time left in the period you have paid for. It cannot be undone, and we cannot restore it afterwards, so export first if you want a copy.
Will it read my address book?
Only if you ask it to, and only the people you tick. Importing from your phone or from Google is optional and read-only, it happens once rather than continuously, and nothing is uploaded from your address book unless you pick it.
Is there an Android version? A web version?
Not yet, and Android has no date. iPhone is first. Grab a Seat is built with a toolkit that can produce an Android app from the same code, and to be plain about what that is worth: an Android build has never actually been made or run, by anyone, on any device. So Android is a real intention rather than a schedule, and anything else would be a promise made out of a configuration file. Web is in the same position.
We would rather ship one platform that works than three that nearly do. If Android is the one you are waiting for, say so, because that is the thing most likely to move it up the list.
What if I stop using it for a month?
Nothing happens. That is the whole design. Come back whenever, and the app will be where you left it, with nothing to catch up on and nothing to apologise for.
Something is broken, or I have an idea.
Please write: support@grabaseat.app. It reaches a person, not a queue, and it helps to include your device, the version from Settings, and what you expected to happen. More detail on the support page.
